Car Rental Barbados: The Complete Driving Guide

Car rental in Barbados is simple once you know four things: you drive on the left, a valid licence from home is enough, the rental levy is already inside the daily price, and most pickups happen at the airport or a hotel. Barbados is a small island, about 34 km long and 23 km wide, so almost everything sits within an hour's drive. A rental car turns that size into freedom. This guide covers what you need, what it costs, where to collect the car, and how to drive it, with links to our deeper articles on each topic.

Is renting a car in Barbados worth it?

For most visitors, yes. Barbados has three public transport systems: the blue and yellow Transport Board buses, minibuses, and the white ZR vans with a maroon stripe. The fare is a fixed BBD 3.50 per ride. Government buses take exact change only, while ZRs and minibuses give change. Many routes run through Bridgetown, so a trip from the south coast to the west coast often means changing there. ZRs leave when they are full, which makes timing a guess.

Taxis are not metered. The government sets the rates and you agree the price before you get in. The last official airport tariff list we found (January 2023, per car) shows USD 19.50 to Oistins, USD 37 to Bridgetown, USD 61 to Holetown or Sandy Lane and USD 72 to Speightstown. Treat these as indicative and check at the taxi desk. A few taxi rides a day add up quickly, and that is the point where a rental car usually wins.

Staying at one resort and leaving only for a dinner or two? Taxis can be enough. Want sunrise at Bathsheba, lunch in Speightstown and a sunset at Oistins on the same day? Rent the car. We compare all three options in detail in do you need a car in Barbados.

What you need to rent a car in Barbados

You need a valid driving licence from your home country. The Visitor Driving Permit was abolished on 15 October 2025 (Barbados Revenue Authority), so tourists no longer buy a local permit. Older guides still mention it, and they are outdated. Some rental companies ask that you have held your licence for at least 2 years, so check this with the company before you book. The full story is in our article on the Barbados car rental levy and driving licence, and the Revenue Authority publishes updates at bra.gov.bb.

Every car shown in our Barbados results has a minimum age of 21. If you are younger, or you do not own a credit card, read Barbados car rental without a credit card and minimum age rules. Our results show "No credit card" and "No deposit required" on the cars we checked on 19 October 2026, and at least 6 partners accept a debit card or cash as a deposit.

The Car Rental Levy

Since 15 October 2025 Barbados charges a Car Rental Levy of BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per rental. In US dollars that is USD 2.50 per day and a maximum of USD 17.50, because the Barbados dollar is pegged at BBD 2 to USD 1. The cap means a rental of 7 days or longer pays no extra. The levy applies to every rental, for residents and tourists alike, per rental rather than per driver. On TropicDrive it is already included in the daily price you see. Up to 50% of the proceeds goes to coastal and nature protection through the Barbados Ocean and Coastal Authority and the Barbados Nature Conservancy Trust.

How much does car rental in Barbados cost?

Compact SUVSuzuki Fronx, Toyota RaizeUS$86
Jeep / 4x4Suzuki Jimny (3-door)US$86

A week in an economy car came to US$392 in total. Every car in that search had automatic transmission and air conditioning, free delivery, and a 4.8 rating. We tested February 2027 and June 2027 and the price was the same, so we do not claim a seasonal difference here, though high season from December to April can be higher. Prices change by date and availability, so search live for the current price. Our cost breakdown for car rental in Barbados walks through what moves the number.

Then there is fuel. Regular petrol in 2026 has cost around BBD 3.90 to 4.00 per litre, about USD 2, and the price is adjusted monthly. Diesel runs at roughly BBD 3.20 to 3.30. Fuel is on top of the rental price.

TropicDrive's Barbados page claims you save around 30% on average compared with international chains. That is our own destination claim, not a guarantee for every date, so compare live.

Where to pick up your car

Grantley Adams International Airport sits in Christ Church, about 13 km and roughly 20 minutes from Bridgetown. Most visitors collect the car there and drive straight to their hotel. Details on the desks, the drive out and what to check at handover are in our BGI airport car rental guide, and the booking page is Barbados airport car rental.

Other options: pickup at the Bridgetown cruise terminal, which lies about 1 mile (1.5 km) from the centre of town (see car rental at the Bridgetown cruise port), and delivery to hotels on the south coast (St Lawrence Gap, Rockley, Oistins) or the west coast (Holetown, Speightstown). Delivery is free on the cars we checked.

Driving in Barbados: left side, roundabouts, local habits

Traffic keeps to the left, as in the UK, and the driver sits on the right. Seat belts are compulsory and holding a phone while driving is prohibited. Barbados has many roundabouts. Give way to traffic coming from your right and pick the correct lane before you enter. Speed limits depend on the area and the signs. They are low in and around towns and usually around 60 km/h outside them, so follow the posted numbers. Do not drive after drinking alcohol.

Bridgetown is the slow part of the island. Traffic is dense and parking takes patience, so plan your town visit for a quieter hour. Outside town, main roads are straightforward. Some inland back roads are narrow or rough, and a regular 2WD car handles nearly all of them. You do not need a 4x4. If you like the idea of an open-air drive anyway, read our guide to the Jeep, Jimny and Mini Moke options in Barbados. The full rulebook for visitors is in driving in Barbados: rules and driving on the left.

Where to drive: coasts, beaches and routes

The island has four distinct sides, and a car lets you use all of them.

  • South coast: Oistins, St Lawrence Gap and Rockley or Accra. Busy, with the nightlife.
  • West coast, the Platinum Coast: Holetown, Speightstown and Mullins Beach. Calm water and the luxury end of the island.
  • East coast: Bathsheba, Soup Bowl, Bottom Bay and Crane Beach. Atlantic waves, wild scenery, and swimming that is limited or dangerous.
  • North: North Point and Animal Flower Cave.

The rule of thumb for swimming is simple. The west coast is calm, the east coast is rough. Carlisle Bay near Bridgetown is calm and has shipwrecks for snorkelling, Accra Beach in Rockley suits families, and Crane Beach is known for its pink sand and boogie boarding. Our guide to the best beaches in Barbados by car covers each one.

Sights worth the drive include Harrison's Cave in the interior, Animal Flower Cave at the northern tip, Hunte's Gardens, St Nicholas Abbey and the Oistins Friday Fish Fry on Friday evenings. We do not list entry prices or opening hours because they change, so check them with the official Visit Barbados site before you go. Bridgetown and its Garrison are a UNESCO World Heritage site, listed in 2011. If you want a ready-made plan, follow our 6-day Barbados road trip itinerary.

When to go

The dry season runs from about mid-December to April or May. It is the busiest and most expensive time. The wet season, June to November, is greener and cheaper with showers that come in bursts, and you still get roughly 8 hours of sun a day on average. The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, peaking from August to October. Barbados sits on the southern edge of the hurricane belt, and according to travel sources a direct hit happens roughly once in 25 years. Crop Over runs from early July to early August and ends with Grand Kadooment on the first Monday of August (Monday 3 August in 2026, a public holiday). Traffic and demand for rental cars rise in those weeks, so book early. More in the best time to visit Barbados and Crop Over.
