Yes, you can rent a car at the Bridgetown cruise port in Barbados, and for a full port day it is the most flexible way to see the island. The terminal sits about 1 mile (roughly 1.5 km) from the center of Bridgetown. Taxis, shuttles and rental desks wait right at the terminal, and local rental partners also offer pickup there, so you can book ahead and skip the search for a desk.

Barbados is small. The island measures about 34 km by 23 km, and almost everything sits within roughly an hour's drive. That makes a single cruise day workable, as long as you pick one direction, keep an eye on the clock and remember that traffic drives on the left. This guide covers how pickup works, what it costs, which route fits a port day and how to get back to the ship with time to spare.

Car rental at the Bridgetown cruise port: how it works

You have two ways to get a car. You can walk up to a rental desk at the terminal on the day, or you can book online first and have a local partner meet you at the terminal. Booking first is the safer plan for a port day. You know the price, you know a car exists for your dates, and you do not spend precious shore hours in a queue.

On TropicDrive's Barbados page you will see pickup options at Bridgetown and the cruise terminal, plus the airport and several hotel areas. TropicDrive compares local Barbados rental partners in one place. You pay a small amount today (about 13 percent in our live test) and the rest at pickup. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pickup.

In our live Barbados search, every car shown was an automatic with air conditioning, a minimum driver age of 21, no credit card required, no deposit and free delivery. Those conditions can differ per car and per date, so check the details of the car you choose. If cards and deposits worry you, our guide to renting in Barbados without a credit card and the minimum age goes through it step by step.

What to bring on the day

  • A valid driving licence from your home country. The Visitor Driving Permit was abolished on 15 October 2025, so you no longer need one. Older guides still mention it, and they are out of date.
  • Your booking confirmation and a payment method for the balance at pickup.
  • Your passport and ship card, since you are coming off a cruise ship.
  • Patience for one more check: some renters want your licence to be at least 2 years old. Ask the rental partner before the trip.

The Barbados Revenue Authority is the official source for the permit and levy changes. Our article on the Car Rental Levy and driving licence rules explains both in plain language.

What a port-day rental costs

Prices change by date and availability, so search live for your day. For orientation, this is what our live search showed on 19 October 2026 for a 7-day rental starting at Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI). Prices include all taxes.

CategoryExample carsFrom, per day
EconomySuzuki Swift, Toyota VitzUS$56
Compact SUVSuzuki Fronx, Toyota RaizeUS$86
Jeep / 4x4Suzuki Jimny (3-door)US$86
Minivan (8 seats)Nissan SerenaUS$104

A week in an economy car came to US$392 in that test. When we compared February 2027 and June 2027, the price was the same, so we do not claim a seasonal difference. High season, from December to April, can still push prices higher. TropicDrive's destination page also says local partners save travelers about 30 percent on average compared with international chains. That is a TropicDrive claim, so treat it as a guide and compare on your own dates.

Two local costs are worth knowing. First, the Car Rental Levy: BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per rental, already built into the daily price. Because the Barbados dollar is pegged at BBD 2 to USD 1, that is USD 2.50 per day, or at most USD 17.50. Second, fuel. Regular petrol costs around BBD 3.90 to 4.00 per liter (about USD 2), and the price is adjusted monthly. For a short island loop you will not burn much, but ask the rental partner how they want the car returned. For a full breakdown, read how much car rental costs in Barbados.

Car, taxi, bus or shuttle from the cruise terminal

A rental car is not the only way off the pier. Pick based on how far you want to go.

The bus is cheap, but routes funnel through Bridgetown and ZR vans leave when they are full. That works on a long holiday and rarely on a short shore call. If you are unsure, our guide on whether you need a car in Barbados compares all of them.

Bridgetown on foot first

If your ship docks early, spend an hour in town before you pick up the car. Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011, and the streets around them are full of coral stone buildings and painted wooden chattel houses. Driving in the center is slow going, with low speeds and narrow streets, so most people do the town on foot and keep the car for what lies beyond it.

A useful pattern is to book the pickup for mid-morning. You see the town while the light is soft, collect the car at the terminal and head out when the day is warm and the beaches are ready.

Two port-day routes by rental car

Choose one coast. Trying to do the west and the east in a single shore day leaves you rushing, and the roundabouts will eat more time than you expect.

West coast: Carlisle Bay, Holetown and Mullins Beach

This is the calm option. Carlisle Bay is right next to Bridgetown, with gentle water and shipwrecks you can snorkel over. Drive on to the Platinum Coast and the water stays calm at Holetown and at Mullins Beach, where a beach bar sits behind the sand. Speightstown is the northern end of the usual day. The drive from Bridgetown to the west coast beaches takes about half an hour, so you spend your time on the sand instead of the road.

Swimming on this side is easy, which makes it the right pick for families and for anyone who wants to snorkel after lunch. For a longer list, see our guide to the best beaches in Barbados by car.

East coast: Bathsheba, Soup Bowl and Bottom Bay

The east coast faces the Atlantic, so it looks wild. Bathsheba has rock formations rising from the surf, and Soup Bowl is a well-known surf spot. Bottom Bay is a sheltered cove with palms, and Crane Beach has pink sand and heavy waves. Swimming on this side is limited or dangerous, so plan to look, photograph and walk instead of swimming. Harrison's Cave sits in the interior if you want a stop off the coast. Opening times and ticket prices change, so check the official Visit Barbados site before you go.

The east is the better choice if you have been to Barbados before or want landscapes more than beach time. Our Barbados road trip itinerary by car links these stops together if you ever return for a longer stay.

Getting back on board on time

The ship will not wait for a rental car. A common rule of thumb is to be back at least 2 hours before departure, and your cruise line sets the actual all-aboard time, so treat that as advice and confirm your own deadline. Work backward from it:

  1. Note the all-aboard time and subtract 2 hours. That is your car-return deadline.
  2. Subtract the drive back to the terminal and a buffer for Bridgetown traffic.
  3. Turn around at your furthest point when that time arrives, even if the beach is perfect.

When you search, set the drop-off to the cruise terminal as well so the whole rental starts and ends at the pier. Ask the rental partner how and where to hand back the keys.

Driving on the left: what to know before you pull out

Barbados drives on the left, as in the UK, with the steering wheel on the right side of the car. If you are used to driving on the right, spend the first few minutes in the terminal car park getting used to it. A few rules to keep in mind:

  • Seat belts are mandatory.
  • Using a handheld phone while driving is prohibited.
  • Roundabouts are everywhere. Give way to traffic coming from the right and pick your lane early.
  • Speed limits depend on the area and the signs. They are low in and around towns and usually around 60 km/h outside them, so follow the posted signs.

Do not drive after drinking. A rum punch on the beach is a reason to hand the keys to someone else or take a taxi back. More detail is in our guide to driving in Barbados and the left-side rules.

Book your cruise port rental

Michael R. put it simply: "Easy booking process and great customer service." TropicDrive holds a 4.7 out of 5 rating based on Google reviews, and every Barbados partner is a local business. Enter your port date, set the cruise terminal as pickup and drop-off, and compare cars. Here is a sample search for a one-day rental in February 2027: compare cruise terminal rentals in Barbados. Change the dates to match your sailing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you rent a car at the Bridgetown cruise port?

Yes. Rental desks, taxis and shuttles operate at the terminal, and local rental partners also offer pickup at the terminal when you book ahead. Booking online first removes the guesswork on a short shore day.

How far is the cruise terminal from central Bridgetown?

About 1 mile, roughly 1.5 km. Some visitors walk it, and others take a short taxi or shuttle ride. Once you are in town, driving is slow, so most people explore the center on foot.

Do I need an international driving permit in Barbados?

Visitors now rent with a valid driving licence from their home country. The Visitor Driving Permit was abolished on 15 October 2025. Some renters ask that you have held your licence for at least 2 years, so confirm with the rental partner before you travel.

How early should I be back at the ship?

A common rule of thumb is to be back at least 2 hours before departure. Your cruise line sets the actual all-aboard time, so check it and plan the car return around it.

Is a rental car worth it for one port day?

If you want beaches, the east coast or several stops, yes. If you only plan to walk historic Bridgetown, a taxi or your own feet cost less effort. The west coast route works well in a single day because the beaches are about half an hour away.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Barbados?

The cars in our live Barbados search show no credit card and no deposit required, and there is a filter for it in the results. Confirm the conditions of your chosen car at booking.
