How Much Does Car Rental Cost in Barbados? 2026 Prices

How much does car rental cost in Barbados? In a live TropicDrive search for 7 days from the airport (BGI), an economy car started at US$56 per day. That works out to US$392 for the week, with all taxes included. A compact SUV or a Suzuki Jimny 4x4 started at US$86 per day, and an 8-seat minivan at US$104. Prices change by date and availability, so treat these as a reliable starting point and run a live search for your own dates.
The daily rate is only part of the budget. Fuel, the Car Rental Levy and a few choices at the counter all move the final number. Here is every cost you will meet, in the order you meet them.
Barbados car rental prices by car type
These prices come from a live TropicDrive search for 7 days from BGI, checked on 19 October 2026. They show the lowest price per day for each category and include all taxes.
| Category | Example cars | From, per day | 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | Suzuki Swift, Toyota Vitz | US$56 | US$392 |
| Compact SUV | Suzuki Fronx, Toyota Raize | US$86 | US$602 |
| Jeep / 4x4 | Suzuki Jimny (3-door) | US$86 | US$602 |
| Minivan | Nissan Serena (8 seats) | US$104 | US$728 |
Every car in that search was an automatic with air conditioning, a minimum driver age of 21, no credit card required, no deposit required and free delivery. Customers rate these cars 4.8 out of 5. Prices vary by date and availability, so search live for the current price.
You may also see a note on the destination page that rental rates can run 30 to 50 percent higher from December to April. Treat that as a general warning that peak months can cost more. In our test searches for February 2027 and June 2027 the price came out the same, so we do not promise a seasonal gap either way. The only reliable method is to search your exact dates. TropicDrive also reports that renters save around 30 percent on average compared with international chains.
Which car fits your trip?
The economy car is the right answer for most couples and solo travelers. Barbados is about 34 km long and 23 km wide, and a Swift or a Vitz handles the main roads without trouble. Families with beach gear often prefer a compact SUV for the extra trunk space and higher seat. The minivan suits groups of up to 8.
The Jimny gets a lot of attention because it looks fun, but you do not need a 4x4 on Barbados. A regular 2WD car reaches almost everywhere. A few inland roads are steep, narrow or bumpy, so drive slowly there. Choose the Jimny if you love the look, not because the island demands it. If you want to compare open-top and 4x4 options, see our guide to the Jeep, Jimny and Mini Moke rental options in Barbados.
The Barbados Car Rental Levy: already in the price
Since 15 October 2025, every car rental in Barbados carries a Car Rental Levy of BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per rental. The Barbados dollar is pegged to the US dollar at BBD 2 to USD 1, so that is USD 2.50 per day and a maximum of USD 17.50. The levy applies to all rentals, whether the renter lives on the island or not, and it is charged per rental, not per driver. Up to half of the money goes to coastal and nature protection through the Barbados Ocean and Coastal Authority and the Barbados Nature Conservancy Trust.
In practice you will not see a separate line for it on TropicDrive, because it is already part of the daily price. The cap means a rental of 7 days or longer carries no extra levy beyond the BBD 35. For the rules around the levy and your driving licence, read our guide to the Barbados Car Rental Levy and driving licence. The government's official site, gov.bb, and the Barbados Revenue Authority at bra.gov.bb publish the formal details.
Fuel: what a tank really costs
Petrol is the second biggest cost after the rental itself. In 2026 regular petrol in Barbados ranged from about BBD 3.77 per liter in February to BBD 3.94 in mid June, and one price tracker listed BBD 4.01 in August. Plan on around BBD 3.90 to 4.00 per liter, which is about USD 2. Diesel sits lower at around BBD 3.20 to 3.30. The government adjusts pump prices monthly, so the number on the pump may differ slightly from what you read here.
Ten liters of regular petrol costs about USD 20 at that rate. Because the whole island fits inside roughly one hour of driving, most visitors spend far less on fuel than they expect. A day that loops from the south coast through Bridgetown to Holetown and back does not take much. Ask at pickup whether the car should be returned with a full tank, and fill up close to where you return it.

What else affects your total
Several small factors change what you pay. Most of them are easy to control once you know them.
- Rental length. Per-day prices and the levy cap both favor a full week over a few single days.
- Pickup place. TropicDrive shows pickup at BGI, at the Bridgetown cruise terminal, and by delivery to hotels along the south coast (St Lawrence Gap, Rockley, Oistins) and the west coast (Holetown, Speightstown). Delivery was free in our search.
- Booking early. Cars run short around Crop Over, the festival from early July to early August, so book ahead for those weeks.
- Driver age. The cars we saw had a minimum age of 21. Our guide to car rental in Barbados without a credit card and the minimum age covers the details.
The payment structure also helps your cash flow. TropicDrive asks for a small amount today, around 13 percent, and you pay the rest when you pick up the car. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pickup. Because TropicDrive works with local rental companies in Barbados, you book directly online without calling around.
How to compare offers before you book
Run two or three searches before you commit. Try your exact dates first, then move pickup or return by a day and compare the daily price. The numbers in this guide come from a search for 7 days from BGI, so a shorter rental or a different pickup place can come out differently. Look at four things in every result: the daily price with taxes, the pickup place, the minimum age and the payment terms. TropicDrive shows all four in one list, so you do not need to write to several companies.
The cheapest car is not always the cheapest trip. A pickup at BGI saves you an airport taxi, and free delivery to a hotel on the south or west coast saves the same. If your flight times change, check the cancellation terms: on the bookings we checked, cancelling was free up to 48 hours before pickup. Conditions can differ per local rental company, so read them on each car before you pay the first part.
One last tip for your budget: decide your car type by the plan, not by the photo. Two adults who stay on the west coast and visit a few beaches will be happy in an economy car. A group of six to eight with luggage needs the minivan, and splitting the cost per person often makes it the better deal.
Rental car versus taxis and buses
Is a rental worth it at US$56 per day? Compare it with the other options. A government bus ride costs a flat BBD 3.50, about USD 1.75, but routes mostly run through Bridgetown. Taxis are not metered. The last official airport tariff list we found (January 2023, per car, in USD) shows Oistins at 19.50, Bridgetown at 37, Holetown and Sandy Lane at 61 and Speightstown at 72. Check at the taxi desk for current prices.
A round trip between the airport and Holetown by taxi, based on that 2023 list, comes to US$122. That is a little more than two days of an economy rental. If you plan more than a couple of outings, the car wins. Our full breakdown is in do you need a car in Barbados.

A sample budget for one week
Here is what a simple week for two could look like, using only the live numbers above. Take an economy car at US$392 for 7 days, which already includes taxes and the levy. Add roughly 40 liters of fuel over the week if you explore a lot, about US$80 at USD 2 per liter. That brings the car side of your trip to roughly US$470, or about US$67 per day.
For the same money you can visit the beaches covered in our guide to the best beaches in Barbados by car, drive the loop from our Barbados road trip itinerary and end a Friday evening at the Oistins fish fry. Entry prices for sights like Harrison's Cave and St Nicholas Abbey are not included, so check the official site at Visit Barbados before you go.
