Barbados Car Rental: No Credit Card Needed and Minimum Age

Yes, you can rent a car in Barbados without a credit card, and you can do it from age 21. In our live search from Barbados airport on 19 October 2026, every car shown had a minimum driver age of 21, required no credit card and asked for no deposit. If you hold a debit card, or you simply do not want to put a hold on a credit card, that makes Barbados an easy island to rent on. This guide shows you where to find those details in the results, which filters to use and what to check before you pay.
TropicDrive is a platform that brings you local rental partners on one screen. We do not rent out the cars ourselves. Each car in the results lists its own conditions, so you see the age limit and payment terms before you book and not at the counter.
Car rental in Barbados without a credit card
The search results page for Barbados has a filter called no credit card needed. Switch it on and the list narrows to cars that do not ask for a credit card. In our test search for 7 days from the airport, every car that came up already showed the same three labels: minimum age 21, no credit card and no deposit required. Each result card repeats them, so you can confirm it on the car you like without opening anything else.
Here is what we saw on the live results for 7 days:
| Category | Example models | From, per day |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | Suzuki Swift, Toyota Vitz | US$56 |
| Compact SUV | Suzuki Fronx, Toyota Raize | US$86 |
| Jeep or 4x4 | Suzuki Jimny, 3 door | US$86 |
| Minivan | Nissan Serena, 8 seats | US$104 |
An economy car for 7 days came to US$392. Prices include all taxes, which covers the Car Rental Levy of BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per rental. Prices change by date and availability, so search live for the current price. Every car also had automatic transmission, air conditioning, free delivery and a 4.8 rating.
Our Barbados destination page says at least 6 of our partners accept a debit card or cash as the security payment. That is a general statement across partners, so rely on the label on the specific car you choose. If a car shows no deposit required, there is nothing to hold at pickup. If your booking mentions anything else, read it before you confirm.
What does that mean for your holiday budget? With no deposit, your full balance stays available for the rest of the trip. You pay a small part of the rental today, about 13 percent, and the rest at pickup. For the bigger picture, read what car rental costs in Barbados.

Barbados car rental age: what our search shows
The minimum driver age on every car in our live search was 21. That answers the most common version of the question, which is whether a 21 year old can rent a car in Barbados. In our results the answer was yes, on every car shown. The filter for minimum driver age lets you set your own age and see only the cars that accept it. Use it if you are close to the limit, because partners can set their own conditions and the list will change.
What we do not state is how any extra fees for young drivers work, because we did not see that in the data. If you are 21 to 24, check the price breakdown and the conditions on the car page before you pay. The same goes for an upper age limit. We did not see one in our search, but the car page is where you confirm it.
The person who drives needs to meet the age on the car. If you want a second driver, check that they meet it too and that they are added to the booking.
Which car suits a young driver on a budget?
At 21 you are probably watching the total. The economy cars start at US$56 per day in our search, which is the cheapest way onto the road, and on an island this size they are all you need. The whole of Barbados is about 34 km long and 23 km wide, so even a full day out rarely means more than an hour behind the wheel. A compact SUV or the Suzuki Jimny at US$86 per day gives you a higher seat and an open feel, and the minivan at US$104 per day suits a group of up to 8 who split the bill. Our Jeep, Jimny and Mini Moke guide explains when the extra money is worth it. You do not need a 4x4 for the main roads.
Your driving licence in Barbados
The Barbados visitor driving permit was abolished on 15 October 2025, according to the Barbados Revenue Authority. Visitors now rent with a valid driving licence from their home country. Older guides still tell you to buy a permit, and those guides are out of date. Some rental partners ask that you have held your licence for at least 2 years, so check that on the car page. This matters more for 21 year olds than anyone else, because a licence you passed last year may not meet that rule. Our guide to the Barbados car rental levy and driving licence goes through the change and what the levy means for your total. You can also check official information at the Barbados Revenue Authority.
Bring the physical licence, a passport and your booking confirmation to the pickup.
Checklist for the car page
Before you book, run through four things.
- Minimum age: does it say 21 or higher, and does that match your age?
- Credit card and deposit: does it say no credit card and no deposit required, or does it say something else?
- Licence: are there rules on how long you have held your licence?
- Pickup and cancellation: will you collect at the airport, near Bridgetown or by delivery, and can you cancel for free up to 48 hours before pickup?
If the answers are clear, you are done. If something is unclear, check the TropicDrive FAQ or pick another car with clearer terms. That is the benefit of comparing on one screen. You see the conditions side by side and choose the car that fits your age and payment method.
How to book step by step
The whole process takes a few minutes.
- Run a search for your dates and pickup location. Here is an example for February 2027: search cars at Barbados airport.
- Switch on the no credit card needed filter and set your age in the minimum driver age filter.
- Compare the cars and read the conditions on the one you like.
- Book and pay a small part today. You pay the rest at pickup.
- Cancel for free up to 48 hours before pickup if your plans change.
Pickup is possible at the airport, near Bridgetown and the cruise terminal, and our Barbados partners can deliver to hotels on the south coast (St Lawrence Gap, Rockley, Oistins) and the west coast (Holetown, Speightstown). Read the airport car rental guide for BGI if you are collecting at arrivals.

Your first day with the car
Grantley Adams International Airport sits in Christ Church, about 13 km from Bridgetown, which is roughly a 20 minute drive. Most people head straight for their hotel on the south or west coast, so the first stretch is short.
Barbados drives on the left, like the UK, and the steering wheel is on the right. If you come from a country that drives on the right, give yourself the first 15 minutes in a quiet car park or on a quiet road. Roundabouts are everywhere. Give way to traffic coming from your right and pick the correct lane before you enter. Seat belts are compulsory and handheld phones are banned. Speed limits depend on the area and the signs, so keep it low in and around towns and follow the signs outside them. Do not drive after drinking. Read more in our guide to driving in Barbados and the left side rules.
Fuel is a running cost to plan for. Regular petrol was around BBD 3.90 to 4.00 per liter in 2026, roughly US$2, and prices are adjusted monthly. On an island this small, a week of sightseeing does not eat much fuel.
Where to drive with your first rental
Barbados has four faces. The south coast with Oistins, St Lawrence Gap and Rockley is busy and has the nightlife. Oistins hosts the Friday Fish Fry on Friday evening. The west coast, or Platinum Coast, with Holetown, Speightstown and Mullins Beach is quieter, more upscale and has calm water. Mullins Beach has a beach bar and Accra Beach in Rockley is calm and family friendly. The east coast around Bathsheba, Bottom Bay and Crane Beach faces Atlantic waves, and swimming there is limited or dangerous. The north has North Point and Animal Flower Cave. Check opening hours and prices for attractions on the official sites before you go.
For your first outing, pick a calm beach on the west coast and save the east coast for a day when you are used to the wheel. New to the island? Start with our complete guide to car rental in Barbados. More articles are on the Barbados blog hub.
