Barbados Airport Car Rental (BGI): Prices and Pickup

Renting a car at Barbados airport takes about as long as it takes to read this page. You book online, you land at Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI), and the car is waiting for you. In our live search for a week starting at BGI, economy cars began at US$56 per day. Every car we checked was automatic with air conditioning, free delivery and no credit card needed. Below you find how the handover works, what the airport run costs compared with a taxi, and how to get out of BGI without stress when you have never driven on the left.
How car rental at Barbados airport (BGI) works
BGI sits in Christ Church, about 13 km from Bridgetown. Plan on roughly 20 minutes to the capital with normal traffic. The whole island is about 34 km long and 23 km wide, so from the arrivals hall almost any hotel is within an hour's drive.
With TropicDrive you compare local rental companies for your dates and book the car you want. We do not own the cars. Our Barbados partners are local companies, and pickup at BGI is one of the options on our Barbados page and on the dedicated Barbados airport car rental page. Free delivery was shown on all cars in our search of 19 October 2026. Your booking confirmation holds the handover details, so read it before you fly.
Payment is split. You pay a small amount today (about 13%) and the rest at pickup. Cancel for free up to 48 hours before pickup. If you want the bigger picture of renting on the island, start with our complete guide to car rental in Barbados.
Book before you land
Search with your real flight times. A pickup at 10:00 AM is the default in our search link, but you can change it to match your arrival. Search BGI car rental for 10 to 17 March 2027, then adjust the dates and times.
What a rental from BGI costs
These are live prices from 19 October 2026 for 7 days starting at BGI. They are per day, in US dollars, and include all taxes.
| Category | Example models | From, per day |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | Suzuki Swift, Toyota Vitz | US$56 |
| Compact SUV | Suzuki Fronx, Toyota Raize | US$86 |
| Jeep / 4x4 | Suzuki Jimny (3-door) | US$86 |
| Minivan (8 seats) | Nissan Serena | US$104 |
A week in an economy car was US$392 in total. We got the same price when we searched February 2027 and June 2027. High season from December to April can push prices up, and prices change by date and availability, so search live for yours. The full cost breakdown for Barbados car rental covers fuel and extras.
The Car Rental Levy of BBD 5 per day (USD 2.50), capped at BBD 35 (USD 17.50) per rental, sits inside the daily price. A rental of 7 days or longer pays no extra. Fuel is separate. Regular petrol has been around BBD 3.90 to 4.00 per litre in 2026, about USD 2. The levy rules and the end of the visitor permit are explained in the Barbados car rental levy and driving licence article.

Airport taxi or rental car?
Taxis from the airport are not metered. The government sets the rates, and you agree the price before you get in. The last official airport tariff list we found is from January 2023 (per car, in US dollars), so treat these as indicative and check at the taxi desk.
| Destination | Taxi from BGI, one way |
|---|---|
| Oistins | USD 19.50 |
| Bridgetown | USD 37 |
| Holetown / Sandy Lane | USD 61 |
| Speightstown | USD 72 |
Take the west coast as an example. A return transfer to Holetown costs USD 122 at those rates, which is more than a day of a compact SUV on our live prices, before you take a single taxi during the rest of the week. For a long weekend at one resort a taxi may be enough. For anything more, the car pays for itself. Our article on whether you need a car in Barbados compares taxis, buses and rental in more detail.
At the handover: what to check
You need a valid driving licence from your home country. The Visitor Driving Permit was abolished on 15 October 2025, so you no longer need to buy one. Some rental companies want you to have held your licence for at least 2 years, so ask before you book. Every car in our results had a minimum age of 21. You do not need a credit card for the cars we checked. The results also show no deposit required, and the "No credit card needed" filter narrows the list. Details are in car rental in Barbados without a credit card and the minimum age.
Before you drive off, run through this short list.
- Walk around the car and photograph every scratch or dent.
- Check the fuel level and note it on the paperwork.
- Test the air conditioning and the lights.
- Ask what the rental company wants you to do if you have a breakdown.
Then sit in the driver's seat, on the right, and take a minute before you move. Adjust the mirrors. Find the indicators and the wipers, which may be on the opposite side from what you are used to.
Driving out of BGI on the left
Traffic in Barbados keeps to the left, like in the UK. The first rule of your first 20 minutes is simple: keep left at every turn and give way to traffic coming from your right at roundabouts. Barbados has many roundabouts, so choose your lane early. Seat belts are compulsory and holding a phone while driving is prohibited. Speed limits depend on the area and the signs. They are low in and around towns and usually around 60 km/h outside them, so follow the posted numbers.
Set your destination in your phone before you start the car, and let a passenger handle navigation if you have one. Land late and tired? That is the moment to go slowly and keep the radio off. Our rules for driving in Barbados explain roundabouts and local habits step by step.

Bridgetown is slow, so avoid it at its busiest if you can. Heading to the south coast (Oistins, St Lawrence Gap, Rockley) or the west coast (Holetown, Speightstown)? Both are reachable by regular roads. You do not need a 4x4. If an open-air Jeep or Jimny sounds like fun, see our guide to Jeep, Jimny and Mini Moke rental in Barbados.
Which car should you pick up?
Two travellers with light luggage do well in an economy car such as a Suzuki Swift or Toyota Vitz, at US$56 per day in our search. Families with beach gear, strollers or big suitcases are better off in a compact SUV (Suzuki Fronx, Toyota Raize) at US$86. Eight people, or a group with a lot of bags? The Nissan Serena minivan at US$104 per day seats 8. The Suzuki Jimny costs the same as a compact SUV and gives you the open-road feel without any need for 4x4 on Barbados. All the cars we checked were automatics, which makes the first drive on the left easier because you only have to think about steering and the road.
Your first day after BGI: three easy drives
Start with a short drive and a swim. From the airport you can be in Bridgetown in about 20 minutes, and Carlisle Bay is right next to town. The water is calm and the shipwrecks make it a good snorkelling spot. Park, walk, eat, and drive on to your hotel once the traffic thins.
On the south coast, Oistins is where you find the Friday Fish Fry on Friday evenings, and St Lawrence Gap and Rockley are busy with restaurants and nightlife. The west coast, the Platinum Coast, is calmer and more upscale, with Holetown, Mullins Beach and Speightstown. The east coast is wilder. Bathsheba and Crane Beach have Atlantic waves, and swimming there is limited or dangerous. Our guide to the best beaches in Barbados by car tells you where to swim and where to just look, and the 6-day Barbados road trip itinerary strings the highlights together once you have your bearings.
Not flying in? Other pickup options
Arriving on a cruise ship? The Bridgetown cruise terminal is about 1 mile (1.5 km) from the centre of town, and rental desks and delivery are available there. We wrote a separate guide for car rental at the Bridgetown cruise port. Staying on the south coast at St Lawrence Gap, Rockley or Oistins, or on the west coast at Holetown or Speightstown? Delivery to your hotel is possible too.
Travelling in July or early August? Crop Over brings heavier traffic and higher demand for cars, and the Grand Kadooment closes the festival on the first Monday of August. Book early. The best time to visit Barbados lays out the seasons. More local reading is on the Barbados blog, and you can check the official visitor information at Visit Barbados.
