Curaçao Carnival 2027: parade dates, parking and car rental

Curaçao Carnival 2027 falls early. Easter is on March 28, Ash Wednesday on February 10, and that pulls the whole season forward: the first parade rolls through Willemstad on Sunday, January 24, and the Gran Marcha, the grand parade, is on Sunday, February 7. If you are on the island in those weeks, or planning a trip around them, now is the time to sort out your transport. Hotels fill up, parking near the route is scarce, and the rental cars still available get more expensive.

This guide covers every parade date, the route, the road closures you need to know about and practical parking tips. It also shows how to use a rental car to enjoy the carnival season without sitting in traffic for an hour and a half.

When is Curaçao Carnival 2027?

The season runs from mid-January to Ash Wednesday. The main parades take place between Sunday, January 24 and Tuesday, February 9, 2027. The season is expected to wrap up around Saturday, February 13 with an awards ceremony at the Curaçao Festival Center.

The Tumba Festival, the music contest that crowns the Rei di Tumba, comes at the start of the season. An events calendar lists January 18 to 22, 2027 at the Curaçao Festival Center. The organizing foundation, Fundashon Desaroyo Karnaval Kòrsou (FDKK), has not officially confirmed those dates, so check curacaokarnaval.com before you build plans around them.

Monday, February 8 is listed as a national holiday (Carnival Monday) in the 2027 holiday calendars. Expect closed offices and a busy day on the roads.

Every parade at a glance

There is no single big parade. The season has seven, each with its own feel:

ParadeDateOfficial start
Horse Parade (Marcha di Kabai)Sunday, January 24, 20274:00 pm
Children's ParadeSunday, January 31, 20272:00 pm
Teen ParadeFriday, February 5, 20276:00 pm
Bandabou Parade (Barber)Saturday, February 6, 20271:00 pm
Gran MarchaSunday, February 7, 202711:00 am
Youth and Teen Farewell ParadeMonday, February 8, 20272:00 pm
Main Farewell Parade (parade of lights)Tuesday, February 9, 20273:00 pm

One caveat: on Curaçao, a start time is a suggestion. The first groups often reach the starting point an hour late, and the parade then needs time to get to where you are standing. For the big parades, expect a delay of one to two hours against the official time. The farewell parade on Tuesday officially starts at 3:00 pm, but the lights only really work once it gets dark, around 5:00 pm.

Which parade should you pick?

If you can only see one, make it the Gran Marcha. It is the biggest, with the most groups, the largest costumes and the most floats. The official window is 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, and if you stand halfway along the route, the first groups reach you late in the afternoon.

With young children, the Children's Parade is the better call. It is shorter, less crowded and less loud, and the kids march in full carnival costumes themselves. Older kids and teenagers have their own evening parade on Friday, February 5. For something smaller and more local, the Bandabou Parade in Barber is worth the drive. And for atmosphere and lights, the farewell parade on Tuesday evening is a favorite with visitors and locals alike.

The route: where do the parades run?

All the city parades follow almost the same route through the west of Willemstad. The parade starts just before the intersection of Frank D. Rooseveltweg and Jan Noorduynweg, about 2.5 miles south of Hato Airport. From there it follows Rooseveltweg to the big Palù Blanku roundabout, takes the first exit onto Schottegatweg West, and continues along Weg naar Welgelegen and Roodeweg toward Otrobanda. The finish is Brion Square, right next to the Queen Emma pontoon bridge and Sint Annabaai.

The Horse Parade uses the same route in the opposite direction. It is the only one that runs from downtown toward the north. The Children's Parade starts at the Palù Blanku roundabout and is roughly 3 miles (5 km) long.

The Bandabou Parade is the exception. It takes place on the west side of the island in Barber, along Kaminda Prospero Popo Rojer, and ends at the Centro Social Deportivo Barber football club.

Parking, road closures and driving during carnival

This is where a rental car makes or breaks your day. A few things to know.

The route closes before the parade arrives. On the day of a big parade, the roads along the route are shut as the parade approaches. That covers Rooseveltweg, Schottegatweg West, Weg naar Welgelegen and Roodeweg, plus the side streets that join them. At the 2025 season opening, the first closures around Rooseveltweg started two hours before the first parade. Do not count on driving out of town easily afterward.

Badly parked cars get towed. If you block the route or park in a way that holds up the parade, expect a tow truck. That is an expensive way to end an afternoon.

Drive slowly in the days before. Stands and scaffolding go up along the route and pedestrians walk on roads where traffic normally moves faster. Police regularly ask drivers to slow down in the weeks leading up to carnival.

Park farther out. If you put your car as close to Brion Square as possible, you will be last in line to leave afterward. A better choice is the area around the Palù Blanku roundabout. It is about halfway along the route, there is more room than in Otrobanda, and the parade reaches it relatively early. If you want to be closer to downtown, you can try the secured parking garages at Riffort Village and the Renaissance complex in Otrobanda, but they fill up early on parade days.

On Saturday, February 6, the day of the Bandabou Parade, traffic toward Westpunt can back up around Barber. If that is your route to the beach, take the southwest side of the island or leave early.

Where to watch Curaçao Carnival

The parades are free to watch from the public route. Pick your spot on three things: can you park nearby, is the view good, and can you get away afterward.

Near Palù Blanku. The roundabout is halfway along, so you wait less than at the finish. For families with kids, this is the practical choice.

At the start of the route. The groups are still fresh, the costumes look the way they were meant to and the crowd is easier to handle.

Toward Otrobanda. If you want the full atmosphere, this is the place. Expect the most people, the most noise and the longest wait before you can leave.

Along the route you will see areas marked off with ribbon, chalk, sand or chairs. Families have claimed the same spot for years. Set up about ten yards away and you will see the same parade without any friction.

Folding chairs, coolers and umbrellas set out along the route before a parade

Download the free app Und'é Kabes Ta? (Android and iPhone). It shows where the parade is and sends an alert when it approaches your location. That saves a lot of waiting in the sun.

What to bring

You will easily stand for three to four hours in full sun.

  • Water, a cooler with drinks and snacks.
  • Sunscreen, a hat and maybe an umbrella.
  • A folding chair. After two hours on your feet, it is the best thing you packed.
  • Comfortable shoes and light clothing.
  • Cash for the food stalls. Not everywhere takes cards.

Keep your bag closed and leave valuables at the hotel. At any large event, people stand close together.

Curaçao Carnival with kids

Yes, you can go with children, and it is fun. Pick the right parade, though. The Gran Marcha runs about eight hours and is hot, loud and crowded. The Children's Parade on January 31 starts at 2:00 pm, covers roughly 3 miles and is far easier with young kids. Bring ear protection for toddlers, because the sound trucks are loud.

Booking a rental car for Curaçao Carnival 2027

The weeks around carnival are high season. Peak periods run 30 to 60 percent above normal prices, and the later you book, the smaller the choice. In a normal season, expect the following starting prices per day from a local operator.

CategoryLocal operator (from, per day)International chain at the airport counter (from, per day)
Economy$25 to $35$50 to $70
Compact$30 to $40$55 to $75
Intermediate$35 to $50$60 to $85
SUV / Jeep$45 to $75$80 to $120
Minivan / 7+ seats$60 to $90$100 to $150

These are indicative starting prices in low to mid season. Carnival adds peak surcharges on top, so today's lower rates are the best reason to book early.

With car rental Curaçao on TropicDrive you compare more than 30 screened local operators and see live availability, so you know exactly what you pay. You reserve online, pay only a small part upfront (the rest at pickup), and cancel for free up to 48 hours before arrival. That is useful if parade dates or your flight times shift.

Landing around a parade day? Plan your pickup. Rooseveltweg is a main route between the north of the island and the city, so expect detours when you arrive or leave. Read our page on car rental at Curaçao Airport and our guide to car rental Curaçao Airport: compare 30+ local providers.

What travelers say: Sarah M. saved over $200 compared to airport prices and called the local company fantastic. Michael R. said the booking was easy and the customer service great.

Joining a carnival group

If you want to march yourself, you can sign up with one of the carnival groups. Expect to pay at least around US$850, which covers a costume and a place in the Gran Marcha. Information and registration go through the FDKK. Sign up well before January, since costumes take months to make.
